What is the Sabbath More Fully?
To give some understanding of how much new light is expected to come near the close of this earth’s probation, consider the following quotations:
• “There are glorious truths to come before the people of God. Privileges and duties which they do not even suspect to be in the Bible will be laid open before the followers of Christ. As they follow on in the path of humble obedience, doing God’s will, they will know more and more of the oracles of God, and be established in right doctrines.” (That I May Know Him p 114)
• “In every age there is a new development of truth, a message of God to the people of that generation. The old truths are all essential; new truth is not independent of the old, but an unfolding of it. It is only as the old truths are understood that we can comprehend the new. When Christ desired to open to His disciples the truth of His resurrection, He began ‘at Moses and all the prophets…’ Luke 24:27. But it is the light that shines in the fresh unfolding of truth that glorifies the old. He who rejects or neglects the new does not really possess the old.” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p 127)
• The question has been asked of me (Ellen G White), ‘Do you think that the Lord has any more light for us as a people?’ I answer that He has light that is new to us, and yet it is precious old llight that is to shine forth from the word of truth. We have only the glimmerings of the rays of the light that is yet to come to us…” (Review and Herald, June 3, 1890)
• “God does not favor His people if they are satisfied with their present enlightenment.” (Testimonies, Vol 5, p708)
• “Although we have in trust the grandest and most important truth ever presented to the world, we are only babes, as far as understanding truth in all its bearings is concerned.” (Counsels to Writers p 29)
There is no question the, that the new light cannot detract even the tiniest particle from the old light. The foundation upon which Christian churches are built remains the same. And the doctrinal pillars of the Seventh-day Adventist church are still standing when the expected new light comes.

This is certainly a comforting look at the new light that will come. It is comforting to know that light is light, in all ages. This means that the new truth (light) to be revealed will never detract to take away from the old truth of God’s Word. Truth stands the test of time. Rather than debunking old truth, the new light that is to come will be a greater unfolding of the former truths we understood from God’s Word.
However, to those who would like to suggest that all light was possessed in Ellen White’s day, perhaps it is humbling to learn that we only possessed the GLIMMERINGS of the light that was yet to come to Sabbath keepers! But what is “glimmerings”? The word glimmerings can be explained as follows. If you are standing in a dark room and can see a slit of light coming from the crack under the door, letting you know that there is light in the adjacent room, that tiny band of light showing under the door is a glimmering of light.
It is also worthy to note that the light that will come is really “precious old light.” This means that this truth was possessed by the followers of God in past generations but has been lost at some point prior to when Sister White wrote this statement. These old truths comprise the new light that is to come. And these lost teachings from God’s Word will possess so much light that they will enlighten the “whole Earth” (or to continue our former analogy, the glimmerings under the door crack will increase until the door bursts open and light fills our formerly dark room).
As we have already seen, truth is symbolized by light in the Scriptures. But another metaphor for truth is water, specifically rain. “MY DOCTRINE shall drop as the rain, my SPEECH shall distill as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass.” Deuteronomy 32:3.
In order for us to study the Sabbath more fully, we must first accept the possibility that there actually could be more light on the subject of the Sabbath, than what we had previously known. In light of the quotations, perhaps it would be more accurate to suggest that we should accept the PROBABILITY that there may be more light on the subject of the Sabbath than we previously had known.
Revelation 14:7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. This message, which is a clear reference to worshipping our Creator points us back to Exodus 20:8-11. Here we find that the REASON we are to “remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy” is BECAUSE “in six days our Lord made heaven and earth the sea and all that in them is.”
The first angel of Revelation 14 is pointing us to honoring God as Creator, which we do by keeping the memorial of His creation – the Sabbath. And this message is being given just prior to the plagues being poured out (as you will read in the context of Revelation). So, the Sabbath message is an end-time message, and yet it was known by Ellen White and the other leaders of the early Seventh-day Adventist movement about 100 years ago.
In the 1800’s, the leaders of the early SDA church not only which day was the Sabbath, they knew when the Sabbath began and ended, how to keep the Sabbath holy, and that the Sabbath was part of the sign that those who kept it were God’s sanctified and loyal people (Exodus 31:13). All of this was known, but none of this is what was meant by understanding “the Sabbath more fully”. Consider the following significant quotation by Ellen White.
“I saw that God had children who do not see and keep the Sabbath. They have not rejected the light upon it. And at the commencement of the time of trouble, we were filled with the Holy Ghost as we went forth and proclaimed the Sabbath more fully. This enraged the churches and nominal Adventists, as they could not refute the Sabbath truth.” (A Word to the Little Flock p18)
Here we are told that as the Time of Trouble begins, we will be filled with the Holy Spirit (this is the latter rain – the final Pentecost). After being filled with the Holy Spirit, we will go out and teach a special message: “The Sabbath More Fully.” Now please pay special attention to the next part of the quotation. The reaction of the “nominal (in name only) Adventists” is to become “enraged” because they “could not refute the Sabbath truth.”
To specifically mention that Adventists will be trying to refute the Sabbath truth that will be proclaimed at the beginning of the Time of Trouble is to state unequivocally that this cannot reference the Seventh-day Sabbath. Nominal Adventists all know that the Seventh-day is the Sabbath. This information is not one that enrages Adventists.
Some might suggest that the “Adventists” mentioned here were not Seventh-day keepers, rather this might be a reference to a group who lived in Ellen White’s day and called themselves Adventists. This Adventist group had accepted the truth that Christ would return in the clouds, but had not accepted that the Seventh-day was the Sabbath.
But this explanation does not fit. This statement clearly refers to a group of people who will exist at the end. They are present at the beginning of the time of trouble. This, a group of people from the 1800’s cannot fit.
Having examined these things this thought-provoking quotation cannot be talking about, we are left with the obvious. This is truth about the Sabbath, which cannot be that the Seventh-day is the Sabbath, that will come at the end of time.
The fact that the Sabbath will be a vital end-time topic is reiterated in the following quotation from Prophets and Kings, “In the time of the end every divine institution is to be restored. The breach made in the law at the time the Sabbath was changed by man, is to be repaired. God’s remnant people, standing before the world as reformers, are to show that the law of God is the foundation of all enduring reform… (Prophets and Kings, p 678)
So what is meant by this? What is an institution? According to the Webster’s 9th Collegiate Dictionary, an “institution” is “an establishment” or “a significant practice”. Both the marriage and the Sabbath are called “Divine Institutions”. But as we look a bit deeper into Ellen White’s comments regarding the restoration of “Divine Institutions” at the end, we find a key to understanding what she meant by the “Sabbath more fully”.
“In the time of the end every divine institution is to be restored. The breach made in the law at the time the Sabbath was changed by man, is to be repaired. God’s remnant people, standing before the world as reformers, are to show that the law of God is the foundation of all enduring reform…” Prophets and Kings, p789.
In the book, Prophets and Kings, Ellen White not only tells us that the divine Institutions will be restored in the end, she also tells us what one of the institutions is. She recounts the story of Jeroboam and how he replaced the Feast of Tabernacles by making his own holy day. Notice what Mrs. White calls the Feast of Tabernacles. “The king’s bold defiance of God in thus setting aside divinely appointed institutions was not allowed to pass unrebuked” (Prophets and Kings, p101).
Clearly, Sister White considered the Feast of Tabernacles to be one of God’s Divinely appointed institutions. And failure to keep it, as God had instructed, brought the rebuke of YHWH upon Jeroboam. Since Tabernacles is one of these institutions, it begins to get a connection to having end-time significance, when “every divine institution will be restored.”
We have seen that Tabernacles is a divine institution, but what does that have to do with the Sabbath? Does it have anything to do with it? After all, the simple fact that both the Seventh-day Sabbath and Tabernacles are divine institutions does not make them both Sabbaths in itself. To see if there is a deeper connection and discern whether or not this could be part of what Sister White meant in her “Sabbath more fully” statement, we must understand what “more fully” means.
Words have changed a great deal in their meaning over the years. Consider the word “gay”. “Gay” meant “happy” in the 1800’s, but today it is a reference to being homosexual. This is a big difference! Thus, to be thorough, we not only need to know what “more fully” means, we need to know what it meant in the time when Ellen White (who used the term) was writing.
For this, we will use the Webster’s 1828 Dictionary. Here we find that “more fully” means “completely, entirely, without lack or deficit, ‘things partially known… will be fully disclosed.”
Thus, the “Sabbath more fully” is – the Sabbath more completely, or the Sabbath without any details missing, or the partial message of the Sabbath will be fully disclosed.
When will this full understanding of the Sabbath Truth be proclaimed? “… at the commencement of the time of trouble, we were filled with the Holy Ghost as we went forth and proclaimed the Sabbath more fully…..” (A Word to the Little Flock, p18). Clearly, this message will be given by God’s people at the end of time, just as the Time of Trouble is beginning.
Now that we know that the “Sabbath more fully” message is not the Seventh-day Sabbath truth being proclaimed more frequently, rather it is about more information on the Sabbath being given, we need to know what was known about the Sabbath in the 1800 and 1900’s. Whatever was known then, cannot constitute the “more fully” category of information now. The following is a list oof what was known about the Sabbath in Ellen White’s time:
• The Seventh-day is the Sabbath
• The Seventh-day is observed from sundown Friday night to sundown on the Seventh day
• The Seventh-day is a day of rest and worship.
• Servile work is not to be done on the Seventh-day
• Worshiping on the Sabbath gives glory to God as Creator.
• The Seventh-day Sabbath is a shadow of Jubilee.
• The Seventh-day is important as it is a sealing message.
There is nothing left to add regarding the Seventh-day Sabbath. It was all known!
Seventh-day Adventists also knew that those who would receive the seal of God would be worshipping on YHWH’s Seventh-day, and those who would receive the Mark of the Beast would be worshipping on His day (the day which for centuries was used for idolatrous sun-worship, Sunday).
Mrs. White clearly states that the Mark of the Beast will be Sunday observance. Most all Seventh-day Adventists are very familiar with this teaching. However, many are not familiar with the fact that Sister White also taught that there was more to the issue of the Mark of the Beast than just Sunday observance (at the end of time), She also stated, that we could not know what more comprised the Mark of the Beast issue until the scroll is unrolling. This scroll, talked about in Revelation 5, is unrolled at the very end of time. (As is evident by the events that transpire when each of the seven seals on the scroll are loosed.) Consider the following statement, “The mark of the beast is exactly what it has been proclaimed to be. Not all in regard to this matter is yet understood, and will not be understood until the unrolling of the scroll.” (Testimonies Vol 6, p17)
It is beyond coincidence that something about the Sabbath, which is a sealing issue, and something about the Mark of the Beast, which is the given to those who reject the Father’s Sabbath, are both end time teachings. Could it be that they are two halves of the same message?
As we proceed, keep in mind that “the Sabbath more fully” means: “More completely understood, with more complete information and more detail added, what is partially understood before being understood more fully.”
So, the information about the Sabbath that we will be looking for must be more than what was known, as we have already stated. But how are we to find the missing pieces about Sabbath? The Sabbath is part of God’s law… To learn about it, we should start there. Malachi gives a prophecy that is the end-time Elijah message. This message points us to God’s Law. So we can be sure we’re on the right track to look there.
Malachi 4:4-6 “Remember ye the law of Moses (this is the Torah) my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord: And He shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
“It is significant… that the law of Moses was to play an important part in helping people prepare for the day of the Lord… He is particularly mentioned because he was mediator through whom God’s instructions, His statues and judgements, were given at Sinai.” (SDA Bible Commentary, Vol 4, p1133-1134)
What is this mention of the “statutes” and “judgements” in connection with the Law? Could it be that there was more to the Law given at Sinai than just the Ten Commandments of Exodus 20?
Sister White taught that there was more to the Law than the Ten Commandments! She wrote, “Those who abolish the law of God for the sake of getting rid of the Sabbath, do away with the most solemn restrictions against using liquor” (Signs of the Times, August 9, 1878) What? Since when were the restrictions against using liquor part of God’s law? It is interesting to note that Malachi said the statutes were part of the Law, and here Ellen White agrees with Malachi. For the prohibitions against using liquor are part of the statutes. In this statement, the commands about liquor, which are among the statutes recorded by Moses, are given equal footing with the Fourth commandment as part of God’s Law.
Paul also taught that there was more to God’s Law than the Ten Commandments. In Galatians 5:19-21, he mixed commandments with statutes giving them equal value and significance. “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: Adultery (commandment), fornication (statute), uncleanness (statute), lasciviousness (statute), idolatry (commandment), witchcraft (statute), hatred (statute), variance (statute), emulations (statute), wrath (statute), strife (statute), seditions (statute), heresies (statutes), envyings (statutes), murders (commandment), drunkenness (statute)¸revellings (statutes), and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in times past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”
Christ Himself taught that there was more to the Law than the Ten Commandments! When asked to state the greatest commandment, Christ listed one that isn’t found among the ten commandments, but these two commands are in the statutes: “Jesus said unto him, ‘Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.’” Matthew 22:37-40
Most of the Christian world believes that the Law of God has only one part: the Ten Commandments. But that is not a teaching that holds up under careful Bible study. Agreeing with the teachings of Paul and Christ, David also believed that there were several parts to the Law of God. David listed these parts of the Law in Psalm 19:7-11.
“The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.”
So we find that the Law of God includes the following parts:
• The testimony (this is the story of what God has done in a person’s life) – which gives us wisdom
• The statutes (these are the instructions found in the first five books of the Bible) – which bring joy to our hearts
• The commandments (the Ten Commandments found in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5) – which are pure and give us enlightenment
• The judgements (these are the blessings and cursings given to those who obey or disobey the commandments and statutes)
This list of what comprises God’s Law coincides perfectly with the Bible definition of the word “Law”. The “Law of YHWH” is translated from the original Hebrew word “Torah” (to-raw), meaning: A precept, or statute, especially the Decalogue (the Ten Commandments), or Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible): -Law” (Strong’s Concordance, #8451).
The same holds true in the original word from which “Law” is translated in the New Testament. In the New Testament “Law” is translated from the Greek word Nomos. Nomas, according to Strong’s Concordance (#3551) means: “Law, regulation, specifications of Moses (given in the first five books of the Bible – including the commandments AND the statutes), also of the Gospel, a principle.”
The reference to “Law” in Christ’s words from Matthew 5 is translated from the Greek word Nomos. Y’shua said, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets… For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.” Matthew 5:17-18.
One can look about and see that heaven and earth have not passed. Therefore the tiniest editor’s marks are not done away with from Torah.
But the enemy of souls hates the Law of God. It has been his ungodly work to try to undermine the Law and weaken our concept of what it comprises. “Satan is at war with that Law which is the foundation of God’s government in Heaven and in earth. God has let His light shine upon you. Will you, dear friends, cherish the light? Men may come in the garb of holiness, having error and truth mixed together, and many be deceived….” (Review and Herald, December 2, 1875).
“Age after age Satan has been blinding men by his wiles. He has co-operated with human agencies in an effort to make falsehood truth. He has worked with intensity to defy the God of heaven by making His law of none effect… And the Sabbath, which God declares to be the sign of the loyalty of His people… reaches into eternity; for God declares that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, His subjects shall come up to worship before Him in the earth made new.” (Signs of the Times, April 7, 1898)
The Law includes the Sabbath. Could it be then that the “more fully” part of the Sabbath truth is found in the parts of the Law that Christians have lost? Could that be the “precious old light” that was to be regained in the last days? To be sure if there is a connection between the Sabbath issue and the Torah, we must discover if there are any details about Sabbath to be gained from the statutes of Torah (Genesis – Deuteronomy).
The statutes DO have a great deal of information to add to the Sabbath issue! Leviticus 23 lists all of the Sabbaths. The first Sabbath mentioned is the Seventh-day Sabbath. But, in addition to the Seventh-day Sabbath, the reader will find that our heavenly Father had instituted annual Sabbaths as well.
Leviticus 23:1-3 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel,and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts. Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.
So, Leviticus 23:1-3 tells us the following:
• The Seventh-day Sabbath is a feast of the Lord
• The Seventh-day Sabbath is the first of several feasts of YHWH!
• The command to keep this day was given by YHWH Himself.
In fact, for those who are interested in learning how to live on earth as they will be living in sinless eternity, Sabbath keeping is an important factor. A special post-sin prophecy about the Sabbath and the New Moons is given in Isaiah 66:22-23 “For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before Me, saith the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord.”
Returning to Leviticus 23, we find that Passover is the next feast of YHWH listed after the Seventh-day Sabbath. Leviticus 23:4-5 “These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons. In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD’S Passover.”
So, Leviticus 23:4-5 tells us the following:
• The 14th day of the first month (Aviv) is Passover – which is also a Feast of the Lord!
• The command to keep this day was given by YHWH Himself.
Does Passover have a place in sinless heaven? Many say that Passover was completely fulfilled (and therefore done away with) at the Cross. Consider the following verses: “And He (Y’shua) said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: Fore I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” Luke 22:15-16
Christ said Passover wouldn’t be completely fulfilled until the kingdom of God.
Continuing on in Leviticus 23, we find more holy days. Leviticus 23:6-8 “And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread. In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. But ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD seven days: in the seventh day is an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.”
Leviticus 23 tells us the following:
• The 15th day of the first month (Aviv) is the first day of Unleavened Bread – which is also a feast of the Lord.
• Unleavened Bread is kept for 7 days.
• There is no servile work to be done on the first or seventh day of Unleavened Bread.
• The command to keep these days was given by YHWH Himself.
Next we find information in Leviticus 23 about the day of First Fruits, and from there, Pentecost – or the Feast of Weeks. Leviticus 23:15-16 “And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete: Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the LORD.”
Leviticus 23 tells us the following:
• The Feast of Weeks (Pentecost) is calculated by counting 7 Sabbaths from Wave Sheaf. On the 50th day after Wave Sheaf, is Pentecost (the Feast of Weeks). (Lev. 23:15-16)
• The Feast of Weeks is a feast of the Lord
• The Feast of Weeks is a day of rest in which no servile work is to be done (Lev.23:21)
• The command to keep this day was given by YHWH Himself.
And there are more holy days to be found in this very complete chapter of Leviticus. Leviticus 23:23-25 “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation. Ye shall do no servile work therein: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.”
Leviticus 23 tells us the following:
• The Feast of Trumpets is kept on the new moon (first day) of the seventh month. (Lev. 23:23-25)
• This day is a Sabbath.
• The Feast of Weeks is a feast of the Lord.
• The Feast of Weeks is a day of rest in which no servile work is to be done.
• The command to keep this day was given by YHWH Himself.
Next, in Leviticus 23, we find the Day of Atonement. Leviticus 23:27-32 “Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a Day of Atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD. And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the LORD your God. For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people. And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people. Ye shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. It shall be unto you a Sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your Sabbath.”
Leviticus 23 tells us more about the Sabbath, as follows:
• The Day of Atonement is kept on the 10th day of the seventh month (Lev 23:27-32).
• This day is a Sabbath.
• The Day of Atonement is a feast of the Lord.
• This is a day of rest in which no servile work is to be done.
• It is a day to afflict one’s soul.
• The command to keep this day was given by YHWH Himself.
From these clear Biblical statements, calling these annual days Sabbaths, we can see that Ellen White wasn’t wrong when she connected the Divine Institutions. Yes, Tabernacles – a divine institution – is part of the Sabbath, which will be restored (along with “every divine institution”) at the end of time.
Now the statement about the Sabbath being proclaimed more fully makes more sense now also. For anyone who has shared the truth of the annual Sabbaths with nominal Adventists will have found how true this statement is, even now: “I saw that God had children who do not see and keep the Sabbath. They have not rejected the light upon it. And at the commencement of the time of trouble, we were filled with the Holy Ghost as we went forth and proclaimed the Sabbath more fully. This enraged the churches and nominal Adventists, as they could not refute the Sabbath truth.” (A Word to the Little Flock, p18)
“And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.” Revelation 18:1. Here we find a powerful end-time promise of more light – a great deal of light – which is to come upon the earth.
Review:
• Is there more light to come than was possessed about 100 years ago? Yes! Our doctrinal pillars were only it’s “glimmerings”.
• What is the Sabbath more fully? Understanding the Sabbath truth with more information than was previously known.
• What is left to learn about Sabbath? The Seventh-day Sabbath isn’t the only Sabbath. There are 7 annual Sabbaths also.
